MIAMI (AFP) — A 19-year-old Austrian who was bitten on the ankle while standing in the sea became the third victim of a shark attack in Florida in less than a week.
A 14-year-old girl was killed by a shark last Saturday and a 16-year-old boy had a leg amputated after a second attack on Monday.
The Austrian was bitten on his right ankle as he stood chest deep in waters off a beach at Boca Grande in southwest Florida, local sheriff's spokeswoman, Ileana LiMarzi, said.
The tourist was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers after the incident, she added. Hospital spokeswoman Karen Krieger said the man "is in good condition".
Beaches in the area remain open but authorities have informed swimmers about the latest attack, said LiMarzi.
