AU leaders adopt common position for G8 summit

SYRTE, Libya (AFP) — African Union heads of state and government at a summit have unanimously adopted a "common position" on asking rich G8 nations to wipe out the debt of all African countries, an AU official said.
AU spokesman Adam Thiam confirmed Tuesday that the contents of the "common position" statement, drawn up for presentation to Wednesday's G8 summit, called for the debt of all African countries to be forgiven across the board by all creditors and for all agricultural subsidies to be abolished.
The AU leaders, in a statement obtained by AFP, hailed June's 40 billion dollar debt relief package extended by G8 countries to 18 poor countries, 14 of them in Africa, but said debt forgiveness "must be applied by all creditors (miltinational, bilateral and commercial), including the African Development Bank" and that "all African countries must benefit from this measure".
