US transport systems on alert after London terror strikes

WASHINGTON (AFP) — London's terror blasts sent a shiver of fear through US cities, as officials tightened security on transport systems and President George W. Bush urged vigilance as Americans headed to work.

Washington, where memories are still fresh of the September 11 attacks in 2001, immediately raised security precautions on its subway system Thursday, and the Amtrak national rail system also raised threat levels.

The Department of Homeland Security, which came into being after the 2001 attacks, called for vigilance across the US transport system.

But officials said however there was no intelligence to suggest that follow-on attacks could be planned for the United States.

"At this time, (there is) no immediate plan to raise the nation's threat...
