US sends police, sniffer dogs down subway after London terror strikes

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The United States raised its terror alert for mass transit to "high" after deadly bomb blasts rocked the London rush hour, with officials vowing "evil" terrorists would not triumph.

Fear flickered through US cities where memories of the September 11, 2001 attacks are still raw, as machine gun toting police boarded the Washington subway and New York and Chicago deployed bomb sniffer dogs.

"Obviously we are concerned about the possibility of a copy-cat attack," said Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, raising the threat level one step to code orange 'high' for trains, subway and bus systems.

Chertoff declined to speculate on the culprits behind the deadly London attacks, but given Al-Qaeda's history of plotting coordinated strikes...
