BAGHDAD (AFP) — Parliament will debate a draft constitution for Iraq on August 15, keeping the country on track for a scheduled mid-October referendum on the post-Saddam Hussein charter, officials said.

"We shall conclude the drafting of the constitution and will hand over the text to parliament for debate on August 15," the chairman of the drafting committee, Sheikh Humam Hammudi, told parliament.

Hammudi had until Monday to announce whether his committee required a six-month postponement to complete its work, or could finish by an August 15 deadline agreed under interim constitutional rules.
