Turkey rejects recognition of Cyprus as condition for EU talks: source

ANKARA (AFP) — Turkey will not agree to any demands to recognise the Republic of Cyprus as a condition to begin accession talks with the European Union later this year, a source close to the Ankara government said.
"Turkey will never accept the recognition of the Greek Cypriots administration as a precondition to be able to begin membership negotiations with the European Union on October 3," the source, who requested anonymity, told AFP.
In a new complication to Ankara's long-standing EU bid, French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin asserted that Turkey must recognise Cyprus before it can begin accession talks.
