Living on the streets helped Martins discover his American dream

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Home for 28-year-old Thiago Crivellari Martins used to be an old car, a secluded spot on the beach, a patch of shade under a palm tree or an abandoned building.
Arriving in the United States from his native Brazil with little money and no grasp of English, Martins spent nine months homeless on the streets of Santa Barbara, California.
Today, Martins is one of the key players with the expansion Chivas USA of America's Major League Soccer (MLS).
He scored the first goal in Chivas USA history, coming in the team's second match, a 3-3 tie with San Jose.
