Roddick struggles into ATP quarter-finals while Paradorn breezes

WASHINGTON (AFP) — American top seed Andy Roddick struggled past stubborn Spaniard Juan Ignacio Chela 6-4, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the 600,000-dollar ATP Washington Classic here.
Roddick connected on 70 percent of his first serves and fired nine aces past his 47th-ranked rival without losing a service game, but still needed a key mistake by the Spaniard to escape the third round at the US Open tuneup event.
"Tonight's a night you feel you're on the verge of playing well," Roddick said. "It wasn't a tight match. I was hitting my shots well, just not connecting... a match like this you win without your best stuff."
