Ugandan president vows inquiry into alleged AIDS fund mismanagement

KAMPALA (AFP) — Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said he would investigate alleged mismanagement that led the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to freeze 201 million dollars (164 million euros) in funding for his country.

At the same time, Museveni said the freeze would not affect Uganda's fight against AIDS for which he and national health authorities have won international plaudits in the past.

"I am very curious myself," he told reporters at a joint news conference with visiting Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa when asked why the Global Fund suspended funding to Uganda on Wednesday.
