Kenya plans massive new elephant relocation

NAIROBI (AFP) — In the midst of a huge project to move hundreds of elephants from an overcrowded coastal reserve, Kenyan wildlife authorities said they would soon embark on another massive pachyderm relocation scheme.

Once its current operation to transfer 400 elephants from the Shimba Hills National Reserve to Tsavo East National Park is complete, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said it would repeat the scheme in the center of the country.

Several hundred jumbos -- the exact number has not yet been determined -- will be moved from Laikipia district in the central Rift Valley to reserves around the east African nation as part of larger plans to reduce conflict between humans and wildlife, it said.
