Hurricane-displaced Saints find support and victory in NFL opener

CHARLOTTE, United States (AFP) — The New Orleans Saints, displaced from their homes in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, drew a standing ovation from opposing fans and won their American football season opener.

John Carney kicked a 47-yard field goal with three seconds remaining to give the Saints a 23-20 victory over the Carolina Panthers in a game that began with opposing fans giving the Saints a standing ovation as they took the field.

The Saints, who have never reached the Super Bowl championship game that has often been played in their town, evacuated the day before the killer storm struck New Orleans and have moved their workout base to San Antonio, Texas.
