PARIS (AFP) — Representatives from the 26 members of the International Energy Agency were to convene to assess the impact of an initiative to release strategic oil stocks to offset the effects of Hurricane Katrina on global crude supplies.

The one-day session of IEA governors, representing 26 industrialized powers, was to be followed by a press conference, an agency spokeswoman said.

IEA members on September 2 announced their intention to release two million barrels of oil and oil products a day from their strategic reserves for a period of 30 days.

The IEA was established in 1974 to coordinate oil policies of member states in order to avoid supply disruptions.
