Police arrest 74 Indonesian football fans after championship melee

JAKARTA (AFP) — Indonesian police said they had arrested more than 70 people for arson and vandalism after football fans went on the rampage when their team lost a national championship in the capital.

A total of 74 supporters of Jakarta's Persija football club were detained after they set fire to eight police vehicles and damaged 11 civilian cars Sunday, said Jakarta police spokesman I Ketut Untung Yoga.

He said the Persija supporters, mostly in their early 20s, went on a rampage after the team lost 2-3 in the Indonesian League championship final to Persipura football club from easternmost Papua province.

The fans also injured 22 policemen and 19 civilians in the melee.
