Bird flu still infecting Siberian farms: ministry

MOSCOW (AFP) — Russia's agriculture ministry said Wednesday that the deadly bird flu virus was still present in four west Siberian provinces, with outbreaks also suspected in a fifth province.
Confirmed bird flu outbreaks were continuing in villages in the Altai, Omsk, Chelyabinsk and Kurgan provinces, the ministry said in a written statement.
Outbreaks were also suspected in villages in the Novosibirsk province, while in the Tyumen province the virus had successfully been wiped out, the statement said.
Separately, the chief veterinarian of Kurgan province said Wednesday that bird flu of the H5N1 strain transmissible to humans had been confirmed at a large poultry farm in the province.
