White House renews threat to veto defense bill

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The George W. Bush administration renewed a threat to veto a 440 billion dollar defense funding bill after the US Senate defied the White House by inserting anti-torture language into the legislation.
By a vote of 90 to nine, the Senate late Wednesday passed the measure explicitly barring US soldiers from torturing or mistreating prisoners, and requiring strict adherence to established military interrogation guidelines.
For a president who has never vetoed any legislation, vetoing a big military spending bill at a time of war could be a risky move and could stall desperately needed funding for US troops at home and overseas.
Nevertheless, White House spokesman Scott McClellan, at a press conference Thursday, said an earlier veto threat still holds.
