Rains add to misery of Kashmiri quake survivors as winter nears

URI, India (AFP) — Rain and aftershocks compounded the misery for thousands of people in Indian Kashmir left homeless by last week's earthquake, as the weather office warned the bitter winter was setting in.

Survivors told AFP they just wanted to get away from this devastated frontier zone where more than 1,300 people died and 5,000 were injured.

Homeless survivors occupying a bus shelter called out "Give us tents!" as relief workers threw clothing from moving trucks on a highway, but there were few takers.

"All relief efforts are concentrated on the highways," said one survivor, Nasir Ahmed, complaining that whole areas were being neglected.

Villagers from Julal and Kalgai, just outside Uri town, said they have not received a single tent.
