Republican baron DeLay wins new trial judge

AUSTIN, United States (AFP) — Tom Delay, a top Republican ally of US President George W. Bush, won a request to remove a judge who had contributed to the Democratic party from presiding over his trial on illegal campaign financing charges.
DeLay's lawyers had filed a motion saying that Judge Robert Perkins could not be considered impartial given his active support for the national Democratic party, the Texas state party and organizations openly opposed to DeLay.
After hearing arguments from DeLay's lawyers and the prosecution, District Judge CW Duncan ruled that Perkins should be removed from the case, Linda Estrada, Travis County district clerk, told AFP.
"He granted the order," Estrada said.
DeLay, who has stepped aside as leader of the Republican majority in the House of Representatives, faces conspiracy and money laundering charges for allegedly helping send 190,000 dollars in corporate donations in 2002 to Republican candidates ...
