NEW YORK (AFP) — A US federal judge denied a retrial to an aide of Osama bin Laden, but slammed the government and US marshals for "incompetence and stonewalling" in their handling of the case.

Wadih el-Hage, born in Lebanon and a naturalized US citizen, is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted in 2001 of conspiracy and terrorism charges stemming from the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya.

His lawyers had sought a retrial, partly on the grounds that US marshals had failed to turn over interviews that they had secretly taped with an al-Qaeda operative and a prosecution witness in the case, Jamal al-Fadl.
