Bush arrives in Argentina

MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina (AFP) — US President George W. Bush arrived in this Argentine resort city, kicking off a five-day trip to Latin America that was also to take him to Brazil and Panama.
Bush, here for the 34-nation Summit of the Americas, hoped to polish the United States' tarnished image in the region and urge fellow leaders to embrace free trade as a weapon against poverty and unemployment.
In anticipation of massive anti-US protests when the summit opens Friday, helmeted riot police guarded checkpoints along metal riot fences on Mar del Plata's streets, while military ships prowled the waters off its many beaches.
