LONDON (AFP) — A poster from the classic 1927 film "Metropolis" has sold for a world record 690,000 dollars (1.025 million euros), the Reel Poster Gallery in London said.
The poster from the Fritz Lang science-fiction epic, then the most expensive silent film ever made, was sold to an American private collector, the gallery said.
Graphic artist Heinz Schulz-Neudamm drew the classic sepia-tone art deco German promotion poster, now the most expensive poster in the world.
The previous record stood at 453,000 dollars, fetched at Sotheby's in 1997 by an American poster for the 1932 film "The Mummy" starring Boris Karloff.
A spokeswoman for the gallery said the "Metropolis" poster was one of only four known copies.
A gallery spokesman told AFP that...
