Pope salutes 'courageous' anti-abortion movement

VATICAN CITY (AFP) — Pope Benedict XVI saluted the "courageous activities" of the worldwide anti-abortion movement during his weekly general audience at the Vatican which included several pro-life associations.

The 78-year-old pontiff told more than 20,000 pilgrims in St Peter's Square that the anti-abortion movement had helped "write the pages of hope for the future of humanity."

Among the crowd were representatives of Movement for Life, an Italian organisation which is holding its congress in Rome.

The pope publicly thanked them for "the 30 years of your courageous activity dedicated to defending the right to life and the dignity of each human person, from conception to natural death."
