Energy shares fuel gains for European stock markets

LONDON (AFP) — European stock markets climbed in early dealing, helped by soaring energy stocks amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine gas dispute.

London's FTSE 100 index of leading shares jumped 0.94 percent Tuesday to 5,671.40 points after striking 5,675.00 points, the highest level for four and a half years. Traders in London were meanwhile at their desks for the first time in 2006 after the long New Year holiday break.

Elsewhere in Europe on Tuesday, Frankfurt's DAX 30 climbed 0.76 percent to 5,491.55 points and in Paris the CAC 40 gained 0.96 percent to 4,800.68 points.

The DJ Euro Stoxx 50 index of leading eurozone shares won 0.83 percent to 3,634.33 points.

The euro stood at 1.1874 dollars.
