New US citizen grabs ice dance lead at US skate finals

ST. LOUIS, United States (AFP) — Canadian-born Tanith Belbin, a US citizen for barely two weeks, and her partner Benjamin Agosto seized the ice dance lead here at the US Figure Skating Championships.

Belbin and Agosto, runners-up at last year's world championships for the first US ice dance medals in 20 years, won the original and compulsory dances to seize a huge lead entering Friday's concluding free dance performance.

Two-time defending champions Belbin and Agosto led after the original and compulsory dances with 107.80 points to 94.13 for second-place Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov and 86.79 for Morgan Matthews and Maxim Zavozin.
