McCarthy eyes Swiss midfielder

SUNDERLAND, England (AFP) — Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy has revealed he is trying to bring Grasshoppers midfielder Ricardo Cabanas to the English Premiership in the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old is a right-sided player who could provide competition for Liverpool target Dean Whitehead.

"Ricardo wants to move to the Premiership and I've had a chat to him about a possible move," said McCarthy whose team are rock-bottom of the table.

"He came over and we had a chat to him and his representatives. We'll see, there's a lot to be done.

"It's not easy these days. It's just contractual things. It was early in terms of talks, but very amicable."
