Accused Cali drug boss denies charges after surrender

MIAMI (AFP) — An alleged former boss of Colombia's notorious Cali cocaine cartel pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking and money laundering charges in Miami after surrendering to US agents in Panama.

William Rodriguez Abadia, 40, did not seek bail and was remanded in custody.

Rodriguez Abadia, a lawyer, turned himself in to US Drug Enforcement Administration agents in Panama Monday and was flown to Miami, where authorities are already holding his father and his uncle, the suspected founders of the cartel.

"He was tired, he is in bad health, he had been in hiding for a long time," his lawyer, Humberto Dominguez told AFP, adding that Rodriguez Abadia had been on the run for years.
