Rush begins with 84 percent of World Cup tickets sold

FRANKFURT, Germany (AFP) — Time is running out for football fans to get their hands on tickets for the 2006 World Cup with 84 percent of match tickets already sold.

German organisers confirmed that 2.6 million tickets had been sold for the finals, running from June 9 until July 9, leaving 470,000 tickets on offer to the general public.

"With the end of the third sales phase, 2.6 million of the approximately 3 million available tickets have been sold," revealed Horst R. Schmidt, vice-president of the organising committee.
