SEOUL (AFP) — South Korean shipbuilders swept nearly 40 percent of global orders last year, out-competing rivals in Europe and Asia, data shows.

South Korean shipyards received orders for 14.5 million compensated gross tons (CGTs) for 2005, or 38 percent of total orders, according to the London-based shipbroker and researcher Clarkson Plc.

In 2004, South Korea had a 36 percent stake in the global shipbuilding market by securing orders totaling 16.9 million CGTs, Clarkson said.

The European Union came next with 8.5 million CGTs, followed by China with seven million and Japan with 6.2 million.
