Bomb blast near Beirut army barracks

BEIRUT (AFP) — A bomb exploded outside a Lebanese army barracks in Beirut overnight, causing some damage but no injuries, after a reported Al-Qaeda warning of an attack.

Lebanese newspaper Al-Balad said it had received a call from an anonymous caller claiming to be speaking in the name of Al-Qaeda who said a 20 kilogram (44 pound) bomb would explode at the barracks.

The warning followed "the expiry of an ultimatum issued two weeks ago by Al-Qaeda for the release of arrested members," the paper said.

The bomb, apparently placed against the perimeter wall of the Fakhreddine Barracks in Beirut's Ramlet al-Baida coastal district, went off at 1:55 am (2355 GMT Wednesday), police said.
