PNG volcanic eruption wanes

SYDNEY (AFP) — A volcano on the remote Papua New Guinea island of Manam was quieter after erupting for two days, officials said.

"The strong phase of eruption from Southern Crater declined significantly," said a spokesman for the PNG Volcanological Observatory in Rabaul.

"This morning it was seen only releasing thin white and blue vapor. A weak glow was visible around the vent accompanied by weak projection of glowing lava fragments up to 100-150 metres (320-490 feet) above the vent last night."

A field inspection showed that lava flows down the mountainside had stopped some 600 metres (1,900 feet) above sea level.

The eruption began late Monday, spewing ash two kilometres (6,600 feet) into the air, raising safety concerns for nearby villagers....
