Mbeki claims ANC stronger than ever after local elections

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) — South African President Thabo Mbeki claimed his ruling African National Congress (ANC) was stronger than ever after local elections in which it garnered some two-thirds of the vote.
And he accused the media of deliberate negativism in underlining instances in which the party had failed to live up to the promises it made when it took power after the fall of apartheid.
"Our movement has emerged from the elections stronger than ever before," Mbeki said in a statement ahead of the announcement of the final result of Wednesday's ballot.
"The ANC will not disappoint the expectations of the people or in any way betray the confidence of these masses in our movement," he added.
Mbeki accused both local and foreign media of "a perverse determination to communicate nothing but negative messages."
