INDIAN WELLS, United States (AFP) — China's Peng Shuai put a brave face on her first-round exit at the 2.1 million-dollar WTA hardcourt tournament here, saying she needs more matches to return to full fitness.
Peng, who was in the news over her tussle with Chinese sports officials for more control over her competitive life, was beaten by France's Stephanie Foretz 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
"I think today I was playing fine," said Peng, who is currently ranked 60th in the world.
"After the Australian Open I didn't play any tournaments. After I got here I only practised five days. After the second set, I didn't have too much energy."
Peng has battled painful corns in her foot that required medical intervention.
