Franklyn Nofziger, Ronald Reagan's press secretary, dies

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Franklyn "Lyn" Nofziger, Ronald Reagan's press secretary, died on Monday of cancer at the age of 81 at his home in Falls Church, Virginia.

Known for his mustache and goatee, Mickey Mouse necktie and portly appearance, Nofziger, from the time he was a reporter for the Copley chain of newspapers, was closely associated with the late Republican president's political carreer.

He followed Reagan from the time of his California gubernatorial campaign in 1966, to his stint as press secretary after Reagan became president in 1981, until he stepped down in 1982 to head his own lobbying firm in Washington.

Nofziger also served as a White House aide to the late president Richard Nixon (1968-1974).
