Appeal to block release of Abu Ghraib photos dropped: Pentagon

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The US government has dropped an appeal of a court's order to release a set of 74 digital images and three videos that documented prisoner abuse at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison, a Pentagon spokesman said.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) had sued the government seeking the official release of Abu Ghraib images and videos collected by Sergeant Joseph Darby, many of which were recently posted by Salom.com, an Internet news site.

"The government's attempts to shield evidence of its own misconduct from public scrutiny ultimately proved to be futile," said Amrit Singh, an ACLU attorney, said in a statement.
