CAIRO (AFP) — The former leader of Egypt's opposition Wafd party was detained after a failed attempt forcefully to reclaim control of the movement which left 23 Wafd loyalists wounded.

Noman Gomaa was brought from the building and taken away in an armoured police van, ending a 10-hour standoff that left the old liberal party's headquarters in tatters and looked to have sealed the political demise of its former boss.

The 70-year-old Gomaa, who led a disastrous challenge to President Hosni Mubarak in the September 2005 presidential election, was ousted in January by the party's general assembly for his "unilateral decisions and his tyrannical behaviour," party members previously told AFP.
