Rice heads back to US after Europe, Iraq visit

LONDON (AFP) — US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice left London heading back home to Washington after a swing through Europe and a surprise visit to Iraq.
She flew out of the British capital after briefing Prime Minister Tony Blair on her snap trip with Foreign Secretary Jack Straw to Baghdad, part of an effort to push Iraqi leaders to end squabbling and settle on a permanent government.
Rice came to Europe last week for talks in Berlin and Paris focusing on Iran's suspected pursuit of nuclear weapons, followed by a trip to Straw's hometown Blackburn in northwest England.
In Baghdad Rice and Straw warned against further delay in the formation of an Iraqi government and urged political leaders to overcome differences and choose a strong figure to restore stability in a country that has edged to the brink of civil war more than three months after elections. ...
