DETROIT, United States (AFP) — Delphi Corporation, the bankrupt auto parts supplier, still believes a current standoff with its employees' unions will end in a negotiated settlement rather than a strike, the company's chief executive Steve Miller said.

As Miller delivered that upbeat assessment in a speech to the Detroit Economic Club, about 50 picketers stood vigil in the rain outside to protest what they described as Miller's attack on the American middle class.

"They know we're here. We didnt expect a very big turnout because it was a work day," said Juanita Cadman, 50, who took the day off to participate in the protest.
