First H5N1 bird flu outbreak on German poultry farm

BERLIN (AFP) — The deadly H5N1 bird flu virus has for the first time been detected on a poultry farm in Germany, the government said, following an outbreak in neighboring France in February.
"It is the first time that this virus has affected farm poultry," the social affairs minister for the eastern state of Saxony, Helma Orosz, told reporters.
The national veterinary laboratory confirmed that the farm in Wermsdorf near Leipzig has suffered an outbreak of the highly pathogenic form of H5N1 which can kill humans, the national agriculture ministry said.
The highly pathogenic form of bird flu has killed more than 100 people, mostly in Asia, since 2003.
Local authorities said a special protection zone of three kilometres (two miles) had been drawn around the poultry farm.
