GLASGOW (AFP) — Ailing British number one Andy Murray has been left off the team for Friday's Davis Cup opening singles tie against Serbia and Montenegro here.

Captain Jeremy Bates has selected the Scottish teenager, who suffered a bacterial infection earlier in the week, to partner Greg Rusedski in Saturday's doubles in the Euro-Africa Zone tie.

Murray, who will become the first Scot to play a Davis Cup rubber on home soil, took part in a 40-minute practice session Wednesday.

"He is not the type of person who will shy away from any pressure situation, which he has already proved in Davis Cup, in Wimbledon and finals of tournaments already in the last year," Bates said.

"He's desperate to play in front of his Scottish fans."
