MADRID (AFP) — The US Internet search company Google is reportedly negotiating an agreement with Spanish publishing and advertising group TPI for the launch in Spain of its guide and search engine Google Local.

Sources close to both companies consulted by AFP neither confirmed nor denied the report in the El Pais newspaper.

El Pais, citing sources close to the operation, said negotiations were at an advanced stage, with an agreement likely in the next few days.

The paper added that an accord could "open doors" for Google in Latin America, where TPI, a subsidiary of Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica, is a leader in the directory business.

Google Local is a directory service and search engine allowing users to find local services and businesses in a particular area.
