National Geographic making inroads in Eastern Europe

WASHINGTON (AFP) — For more than 100 years the venerable US magazine National Geographic has engaged readers the world over with its insightful articles and striking photographs.

But with the Internet siphoning off readership and with new markets opening up throughout the globe, the magazine in recent years has aggressively pursued fresh opportunities by launching local-language editions in several Eastern European countries, the latest being a Slovenian edition set to appear later this month.

"Eastern Europe has been very receptive to National Geographic," Terrence Adamson, executive vice president of the National Geographic Society told AFP. "The ethic for reading, for learning in Eastern Europe is quite strong and it's strong among younger people."
