2,000 protestors demand return to law and order in Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK (AFP) — About 2,000 people have marched to the centre of Kyrgyzstan's capital, demanding constitutional reforms and a "return" to law and order after the supreme court allowed a controversial businessman to stand at a by-election.

The protest organised under the title "For Law and Order" was organised by non-governmental organisations and politicians, including a number of those who participated in the March 2005 ouster of president Askar Akayev but have since found their wishes ignored under the new government.

"Our main demands are not to allow criminals into power and to swiftly carry out reforms of the constitution and the courts," said parliament deputy Kubatbek Baibolov Saturday.
