Red Wings finish with NHL's best record

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — The Detroit Red Wings still finished with the league's best record despite a 6-3 loss to Nashville on the final night of the National Hockey League's regular season.

The Red Wings (57-16-8) had already secured the President's Trophy for best overall record and as the West's top seed will meet feisty Edmonton in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Paul Kariya recorded a hat trick as Nashville scored six straight goals against Detroit. The Predators (48-25-8) finished the season with the best record in franchise history and will face fifth-seeded San Jose Sharks in the playoffs which begin on Friday.
