Schering net profit up in first quarter

BERLIN (AFP) — Schering, the German pharmaceuticals specialist, has said that strong demand for its best-selling multiple sclerosis drug Betaferon and its Yasmin contraceptive pill boosted earnings in the first three months of the current year.

Schering, currently being taken over by bigger rival Bayer, said in a statement that bottom-line profits rose by 21 percent to 174 million euros (215 million dollars) in the period from January to March.

Operating profit was up four percent at 240 million euros on a 16-percent rise in sales to 1.406 billion euros, the statement said.

"Betaferon and Yasmin were the main growth drivers," Schering said.

"The excellent first-quarter figures will propel us towards reaching the goals we have set ourselves for 2006,"...
