Sister of ex-Colombia president murdered in kidnapping

BOGOTA (AFP) — The sister of former Colombian president and Organization of American States chief Cesar Gaviria was murdered during a kidnapping attempt, President Alvaro Uribe said.

Liliana Gaviria's body was found in an industrial area a few kilometers (miles) from her home near Pereira, 340 kilometers (210 miles) west of Bogota, he said.

"The kidnappers appeared to have made a forcible entry when she and a bodyguard, a police officer, resisted," said Pereira Mayor German Dario Saldarriaga.

"Four or five persons tried to kidnap her," he said.

A group of armed men snatched Gaviria from her home in the afternoon, killing one of her bodyguards in the process, a police spokesman said.
