White House renews call for guest worker program, amid immigrant protests

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The White House renewed its call for a top-to-bottom overhaul of US immigration laws, including a guest worker program for millions of undocumented workers, as hundreds of thousands of protesters demonstrated for immigration law reform.

"The president is focused on continuing to work with senators to get a comprehensive bill off the floor of the United States' Senate," White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters at a briefing.

"We all share the view that we need to continue to strengthen our borders and we need to continue to enforce our laws when it comes to interior enforcement," McClellan said.
