US government joins lawsuit against Abbott Laboratories

MIAMI (AFP) — The US government said it has joined a lawsuit against Abbott Laboratories, claiming the pharmaceutical company vastly inflated prices for drugs reimbursed under federal healthcare programs.

The governments complaint filed in Miami alleges that Abbott's Hospital Products Division (HPD) reported prices that were more than 10 times the actual sales prices on many of the drugs it manufactures, since at least 1991.

It said the company inflated the prices knowing that US healthcare programs established reimbursement rates based on reported prices. The Medicare and Medicaid programs have reimbursed Abbotts customers more than 175 million dollars for the drugs that are the subject of the complaint.
