Dawson earns call-up to England World Cup squad

LONDON (AFP) — Spurs' resurgence last season has seen Michael Dawson earn a call-up to England's World Cup squad as a standby.

The 22-year-old central defender replaces Charlton's Luke Young, who injured an ankle and was forced to surrender his place.

Dawson has formed an impressive central defensive partnership with Ledley King - who missed out on selection because of injury - that formed the basis of Spurs finishing fifth in the Premiership - only losing out on the Champions League slot on the last day to bitter rivals Arsenal.

Dawson, who joined Spurs from Nottingham Forest in January 2005, has never been called up before by Sven-Goran Eriksson, though he has played regularly at Under-21 level.
