'Major' power cut stops trains between New York and Washington

NEW YORK (AFP) — A "major power outage" severely affected train service between New York and Washington, a key northeast route, and other regional services, rail operator Amtrak said.

Amtrak said it did not know what had caused the huge power outage at the height of the morning rush hour, but said it was investigating.

Television news footage showed passengers being escorted from trains, and crowds of confused travellers filling station platforms.

However, Amtrak said that by late morning power had been restored to lines between New York and Washington and that train service was being resumed.
