Cancer experts put focus on targeted molecular therapies
AFP, June, 2006
ATLANTA, United States (AFP) — Targeted molecular therapies, promising treatments that act on genetic and biochemical mechanisms, are the darlings of cancer experts gathered this weekend at the congress of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
It is the world's largest gathering of oncologists, and drug manufacturers are jostling to sell their anti-cancer treatments, to a market worth 15 billion dollars.
Researchers are currently evaluating more advanced treatment options such as gene therapy, hormone therapy and targeted molecular therapies (single and multiple).
The molecular therapies -- for which some clinical test results were to be announced here -- apparently are the most promising because they block pathways and vital functions of cancerous cells, killing them.
They are aimed at supplementing key cancer treatment tools such as radiation, used to destroy or damage cancer cells using high energy x-rays; chemotherapy, or using drugs to eliminate cancer cells by interfering with their ...
