GAZA CITY (AFP) — Palestinian civil servants, who endured three months without pay, thanked God as they rushed to withdraw desperately needed cash after banks began to transfer salaries.

Bassel Ashur, a 22-year-old member of Palestinian Authority president Mahmud Abbas's Force 17 protection guard, invoked the heavens in delight as he held up wads of banknotes from a Gaza ATM that will nonetheless not go far.

"Thank God, three months without pay was hard," he shouted at the two dozen people still queuing up behind him hoping to receive their own pay.
